Blue Carousel

After Marc Chagall’s The Eiffel Tower Marriages

Catch them if you can, the bridal pair
floating round and round the goldfish
canvas, buoyed by insistent waves
of gravity-defying love.
See them drifting the labyrinth of dream time:
dwarfs in a world of colossal creatures
caught in the whirl
of Chagall’s carousel.
They hitch a ride
on a red-crested rooster,
fiddlers bowing it higher and higher
in a Paris lit by menorahs.
The goat-cellist’s dirge turns the air blue
but the rooster soars through—
through to the Tower to Mendelssohn—
in spotlight beam of a fried egg sun.

Attrapez-les si vous pouvez, les mariés
flottant tout autour du bocal,
soulevés par des vagues insistantes
d’amour défiant la gravité.
Voyez-les glisser dans le labyrinthe des rêves :
des nains dans un monde de créatures colossales
pris dans le tourbillon
du manège de Chagall.
Ils chevauchent
un coq à la crête rouge,
les violonistes jouant de plus en plus haut
dans un Paris illuminé par les menorahs
La chèvre violoncelliste bleuit la fête
mais le coq traverse la scène -
vers la Tour avec Mendelssohn -
sous le faisceau d’un oeuf au plat ensoleillé
