E. Ethelbert Miller, «Militant Littéraire»

E. Ethelbert Miller est un écrivain et « militant littéraire » longtemps inspirateur et grand organisateur du mouvement afro-américain (african américan) littéraire centré à Washington, D.C. Miller vit la poésie selon sa foi dans le rôle social du poète comme transformateur d’individus et de nations ; et selon lequel le poète est obligé de se mettre au premier rang de tout effort pour créer une communauté humaine et culturelle qui s’organise en faveur de la justice et du changement progressif.
Parmi ses activités multiples, il est co-éditeur avec Jody Bolz de la revue Poet Lore. On l’entend souvent sur les ondes la chaîne de radio américaine National Public Radio, et il propose actuellement un programme télévisé sur WDCU-TV, Washington, D.C., The Scholar. Il est aussi chef du comité de direction de The Institute for Policy Studies à Washington, D.C., et il a reçu deux fois, en 2004 et 2012, le statut de Fulbright Senior Specialist Program Fellow.
E. Ethelbert Miller est donc un « homme d’état » de la nation « Poésie ». C’est un honneur de pouvoir inaugurer cette série consacrée à la poésie contemporaine de langue anglaise avec les premières traductions de son oeuvre poétique en français.

E. Ethelbert Miller is a writer and “literary activist” long known as the principal inspiration and leading organizer of the African American literary movement centered in Washington, D.C. . Miller lives poetry according to his faith in the social role of the poet as a transformer of individuals and nations; and according to which the poet has a duty to be in the front rank of all efforts to create a human cultural community organized to further justice and progressive change.
Among his multiple activities, he is co-editor with Jody Bolz of the review Poet Lore; he can often be heard in interviews on the American public radio channel National Public Radio; and he is currently appearing as the host of his own television show broadcast on WDCU-TV in Washington, D.C, The Scholar. He is also board chairman of the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington; and he has twice been selected as a Fulbright Senior Specialist Program Fellow, 2004 and 2012.
E. Ethelbert Miller is thus “senior statesman” in the nation called “Poetry.” It is an honor to inaugurate this series devoted to contemporary poetry in English with his poems, accompanied by the first translations of his work in French.
