charlie went thru
the great war from ships boy to
able seaman
a gun layer at jutland
and 1918 sent to war
with the white russians

in the mid 60s
he used to play-box me
outside the blud red door
of his dark terraced house
in st marys road
then after tea
we all trooped off down the boozer
in lower gillingham

the men drank sour black beer
me lemonade
and i played charlie
at bar-billards
nanna hamper drank port
and called my grandad ‘char’

i needed a wee
and went out back
with charlie
the stench of urine
coming up off
the
wet concreat
stood there together
pissing into the black piss trough
him 70

est passé de mousse à
matelot de 2e classe
pointeur en mer de jutland
et en 1918 on l’a envoyé se battre
aux côtés des russes blancs

dans les années 60
il jouait à boxer avec moi
devant la porte rouge sang
de sa maison grise
à st marys road
puis après dîner
on descendait tous au bistrot
à lower gillingham

les hommes buvaient de la bière noire et amère
moi de la limonade
et je jouais au billard
avec charlie
mamie hamper buvait du porto
et appelait mon grand-père « charlou »

j’ai eu envie de faire pipi
alors on est sorti
avec charlie
une odeur puante d’urine
montait
du
cimant trempé
on était là ensemble
à pisser sur le mur noir
il avait 70 ans
