When I see a cockroach,
I don’t grow vio­lent like you.
I stop as if a friend­ly greeting
Had passed between us.

This roach is famil­iar to me.
We met here and there,
In the kitchen at midnight,
And now on my pillow.

I can see it has a couple
Of my black hairs
Stick­ing out of its head,
And who knows what else?

It car­ries a false passport-
Don’t ask me how I know.
A false pass­port, yes,
With my baby picture.

 

Cafard

Quand je vois un cafard
Je ne m’affole pas comme vous.
Je m’arrête comme si l’on s’était salués
De la façon la plus amicale.

Ce cafard m’est bien connu
Nous nous sommes ren­con­trés ici et là
Dans la cui­sine à minuit
Et ici et main­tenant même sur mon oreiller.

Je détecte qu’il sort de sa tête
Une touffe de mes poils noirs.
Et qui sait quoi encore?

Ce cafard porte un faux passeport
Ne me pro­posez pas de vous dire com­ment je le sais.
Un faux passe­port, oui, je vous dis,
Qui porte ma pho­to de bébé.
