Dans le livre des ombres
                      la pre­mière page est noire
                      et la sec­onde plus noire encore,
                      mais à la page suivante,
                      et à celle qui suit, il y a un vacillement
                      comme si les ombres dansaient
                      entre elles, comme si elles dansaient
                      en imi­tant les feuilles.
                      Avant d’avoir trou­vé sa mare
                      c’est son ombre qu’aimait Narcisse,

                      comme nous en venons à aimer nos morts
                      quand nous les rencontrons
                      en rêve. Car à mesure que nous tournons
                      les pages du livre
                      chaque page se fait plus lourde
                      sous nos doigts engour­dis, et seules
                      les ombres
                      n’ont pas de poids,
                      seules les ombres nous accueillent
                      sous leur voûte froide.

                       The book

                       In the book of shadows
                       the first page is dark
                       and the sec­ond dark­er still,
                       but on the next page,
                       and the next, there is a flickering
                       as if the shad­ows are dancing
                       with them­selves, as if they are dancing
                       with the leaves they mimic.
                       Before Nar­cis­sus found the pool
                       It was his shad­ow he loved,

                       the way we grow to love our deaths
                       when we meet them
                       in dreams. For as we turn
                       the pages of the book
                       each page grows heavier
                       under our numbed fin­gers, and only
                       the shad­ows themselves
                       are weightless,
                       only the shad­ows wel­come us
                       beneath their cool canopy.
